During the siege of Mafeking normal commerce was interrupted and rationing ordered, Baden Powell issued 1, 2 and 3 shilling coupons as well as as ten-shilling and one-pound notes. From February to March 1900, these notes were printed in an underground shelter on ordinary writing paper. As the notes were released into circulation, the Army Paymaster, Capt. H. Greener, collateralized the notes by depositing checks of an equivalent amount into the Mafeking branch of the Standard Bank of South Africa, which were accepted by Robert Bradshaw Urry, the manager.
The issue could be redeemed at that bank following the resumption of civil law. So few of the notes and coupons were actually redeemed that it created a large bank account and later raised questions of faulty accounting. Over £5,228 in notes and coupons were issued, however, little more than £638 were ever redeemed. The rest were kept as souvenirs of the seige of Mafeking or lost, and redemption of the notes ceased in September 1908 |

The photo on the lid is of Friedrich Wilhelm, Prinz von Preussen, taken around 1869/70. The grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm I., and son of Kronprinz Friedrich, and is the later Kaiser Wilhelm II. In this photo he is aged around 10/11 years old. Prinz Wilhelm (or Friedrich Wilhelm) was born on 27.I.1859 in Potsdam, Neues Palais. At the age of 10 years, a Prince of Prussia was officially "volljährig" (or come of age), and was made a Leutnant (at that time: Seconde-Lieutenant) in the 1st Foot Guards (Erstes Garde-Regiment zu Fuss) in Potsdam, and automaticly received the Black Eagle Order ( Schwarzer Adler-Orden) and the Haus-Orden von Hohenzollern, which can be seen in the photograph. All Princes of Prussia went through this tradition. This photo is a well known photo and could be bought as a postcard or cabinet photo at the time

At the end of 1916, the ship was moved from the Baltic to Saint Petersburg (then Petrograd) for a major repair. The city was brimming with revolutionary ferment and part of her crew joined the 1917 February Revolution. A revolutionary committee was created on the ship (Aleksandr Belyshev was elected its captain). Most of the crew joined the Bolsheviks, who were preparing for a Communist revolution.
On 25 October 1917, the refusal of an order for the Aurora to take to sea sparked the October Revolution. At 9.45 p.m. on that date, a blank shot from her forecastle gun signalled the start of the assault on the Winter Palace, which was to be the last episode of the October Revolution. Aurora's crew actually took part in the attack. |

| WW2 JAPANESE WAR MEDAL The Order of the Rising Sun ("Kyokujitsusho"), established in 1875 as Japan’s first national decoration, could be awarded to either military or civilian personnel for meritorious service. There were eight classes to this order, of which only the lowest two were given to enlisted personnel. This medal, the eighth of the eight classes, is in the form of a three-lobed spray of silver Paulownia leaves, with its veins articulated to the obverse, and with a row of four kanji characters to the reverse, which translate to "Order of Merit Decoration." The leaves are surmounted by three sets of silver Paulownia flowers on stalks, five to the center and three to each side. Through a perforated ball atop the uppermost, central flower passes the ribbon’s suspension ring. Fed unto the ring is a 1 7/16" wide watered silk ribbon, in white with crimson edges. The ribbon exhibits only light age soiling, the medal is in an uncleaned condition.
